The National Society Of Arts & Letters holds a nation-wide
competition for visual artists, about every six years. Branches across
the country recognize the accomplishments of artists in there
particular state. In a ceremony, held in Clearwater, FL at the Belleair
Country Club on April 14th, 2007. Abraham received her award and plaque
from Art Chairman, Marie Gage. She shared the inspiration of her
painting with NSAL members and colleagues.
Abraham's winning painting is titled Hush, and depicts imagery taken
from the lullaby "Hush Little Baby." The lyrics "If that mockingbird
won't sing, mamma's gonna buy you a diamond ring," inspired the image
of a
mockingbird lying in its own blood, with a diamond ring tied to its
foot. Abraham's mother sung the song to her as a child, and she
continues to associate its lyrics with hope in times of trouble. "I
envisioned this piece
while lying in bed one night. Unable to sleep, I realized that I
was silently singing the lyrics to myself. It appears that my
subconscious relates it to the soothing effect of my mother's voice, as
an effort to calm my mind."
Abraham is also co-creator of the Nomadic Project, where she and
musician Alfonso Llamas, prepare for a two year, national exhibit. The
show includes fifty of Abraham's canvases that illustrate each state in
the nation. To find out more about Abraham's work, and her current
